Silicones for Safety

Manufacturers of chemicals often use reactive silicone ingredients directly as intermediates in the synthesis of their products.  Silicones are widely used as process aids to improve the efficiency of chemical processes, as lubricants and as foam control agents (Silcolapse®) to minimize the reduction of effective reactor volumes, of pumping efficiencies, and of the shear in mixing operations. Foam control agents are also used in the treatment of aqueous effluent streams generated by chemical processing. 

Silicones are extremely versatile, with features such as water repellency, heat and chemical resistance contributing to safety in the chemical industry:  

  • Silicone resins impart heat resistance to coatings for the protection of surfaces

  • Silicone elastomers are chemically resistant, making them ideal for flexible tubes and hoses for the transfer of products

  • Silicones are used to make waterproof seals and electrical insulation products
